3D Printing Project: Makita Battery Holders

As you might know i have been Working around with a 3D Printer for quite some time now and i recently started trying to make a Business out of this.

My town has a lot of Woodworkers and Craftsmen, so on one not too exciting evening spent working on my new Workshop, a Friend of mine came over. We, that being my Friend, my Dad and Me, drank a Beer and discussed Things regarding the Workshop when He turned to me and said “Hey, you can make custom Parts on your 3D Printer right?” Now, of course my Eyes lit up. I love talking about 3d Printing!

After some back and Forth it turned out he was Setting up a Tool Station in his own Workshop and needed a way to store the Batteries for his Makita tools.

So i went to Work. I found a Drawing of a Battery connection on the Internet that made it very easy to edit it in Cad. I did a test Print to check for fitment and after small adjustments i got it to snap in place securely, but not too harsh.

My Friend had told me He needed the Mounts to hold the Battery upright to mount in a Drawer-like System, so i created the Holder in the shape of a L.

This of course could not be printed like it is mounted.

The part is mounted in this orientation, but should not be printed like this

You might know that 3d Printed parts are strong along the layer lines but relatively weak when Pulling the layers apart, so the part could, when knocked or pulled, break at the base.

Closeup of the weak orientation, the possibility of part failure just above the bottom plate is high just

For optimal strength results, i layed it down sideways. This creates a few other problems but they are all solvable with a little effort.

Achieving Better Strength in the part by laying it on its side

After Finishing the design i printed them in Pla+ and gave them to my Friend. He was very happy with them and he uses them in his Workshop daily.
